BFG5 - 5 Reason Video Gamers Should Look at Figure Collecting

Action Figures and Statues provide a new way to celebrate video game culture.

They say variety is the spice of life. As a retro video game collector, I've seen the grind... the hustle... I've been there, wheeling and dealing, trying to get the best deals on those hard to find classics. However, there came a time I hit a wall. I had found everything I originally had set out to find nearly a decade ago and seeing the same Mario Duck Hunt cartridge for the umpteenth time became dull. I needed a change. Action figures and statues was that outlet I needed. Although I am still a retro video gamer at heart, action figures and statues added that zest to collecting. Like a breath of fresh air, I have found that spice to make my hungry again.

Here are 5 reasons I recommend video games (specifically retro video game collectors) should look at Action Figure and Statue Collecting...

1) There's something for every budget
Most retro gamers won't notice there's another world out there outside of the pixels and cartridges. Unlike the retro gamer market, action figures and statue collecting is not necessarily finite, there's many companies continually producing appealing items for different price ranges. That's why it's important to do research (or let BFGR do it for you). From $10 - $1000, you'll be sure to find some cool items to add to your collection.

Pop Figures have many licenses including games like Assassin's Creed, only $10-$15 each

2) It's a Better Investment than Video Games
I know I'll get some heat for this, but the fact is the retro video game market is hot right now (meaning expensive). Prices for games have never been higher and continue to rise. However, retro video gamers are very distinct market of people, and yes it is growing, but anyone can own a statue or action figure to enjoy it, there's a lot more to buy and maintain if you're looking at video games. You need the console, television, accessories and you're reliant on electricity to run. When the bomb drops (no electricity), I can still enjoy my action figures and statues, but video games are dead in essence.

Also, there's the 25 year theory or disc rot theory that retro gamers seem to never mention. It pretty much states motherboards and discs were never designed to hold data for this long. Eventually, they'll all lose their data most likely in our life time. This theory has never been proven however. Conversely, you'll be long dead before your action figures and statues biodegrade.

Lastly, action figures and statues especially, they rarely loose their value as long as you keep good care of them and don't throw away the box. In fact, they usually go up in price. How long can retro video games maintain their current valuations?

3) Prevent Video Game Collector's Fatigue
I've mention retro video games can feel finite (limiting) at times. When you've been in the game as long as I have, you'll get sick of seeing the same games over and over again. Especially in this market where retro gamer supply seems slim at best of times. Action Figure and Statue collecting can be that outlet, a refreshing break to get your mind out of a frustrating video game collecting rut.

4) The More You Know, The More You Grow (YOUR BANK!)
The basic fact is a lot of retro video gamer collectors like to flip items. The secret to being a successful flipper is to not peg hole yourself to one thing (like retro video games). Maximize your trips to the flea market or thrift store. Knowing other markets such as action figures, you can keep and eye out for those items you can make a quick buck on, giving you more money for your main collecting goals.

So you got every game ever, now what?
5) Variety is the Spice of Life
Yes, as retro video gamers, we're die hard for what we love. However, Action Figures and Statues give you a unique way of celebrating those items you love, INCLUDING video games. Additionally, at least opening yourself up to statues and figures, you also open yourself up to other possibilities of enjoyment. Action figures and statues act like a central tether that produces items not only for video gamers, but movies, comic books, nostalgia and more! You may find a new outlet, open yourself to new experiences. You might even find that something that makes life a little more worth living.
